BZ's Chino Air Show 2009 Photo Gallery

The Planes of Fame Air Show in Chino, CA is as good as it will ever get for war bird lovers out on the West Coast! For the 2009 show, the main theme was a tribute to Grumman aircraft - and boy, did they deliver!

Flying at the show were planes which spanned the early Grumman years through to the end of WWII. The list includes the F3F Flying Barrel, J2F Duck, F4F Wildcat(FM-2), 3 Avenger torpedo bombers, 2 F6F Hellcats, 5 F8F Bearcats, and all 3 airworthy F7F Tigercats! This was the first time for me to see the Avengers flying, and I was thrilled to watch them in action.

Sticking with the Grumman theme, the Horsemen swapped their P-51s for F8F Bearcats to do their 3 ship aerobatic performance. They started this (earlier this year) as a tribute to the Blue Angels, which began flying using the Bearcats in the late 40's.

Besides the Grumman planes, there were P51 Mustangs, P40 Warhawks, Japanese Zeroes, a Val replica, a F4U Corsair, a P47 Thunderbolt, 2 B-25 Mitchell bombers, P-38 Lightning, P-63 Kingcobra, a Fairey Firefly, a Sea Fury, F-86, Mig-15, T-33, Stearman, a couple of Yaks, A-10 Warthog, and a C-17 doing flying demonstrations! You could say that it was an action packed event!

Of course, I went crazier than usual with the number of pictures I took. Even while trying to be selective with my shots, I ended up with WAY TOO MANY! The up side is that I have a lot to pick from, the down side is that it has taken me days to sort through them just to delete the bad ones. There was so much material it took me 2 weeks to organize and set up these pages! Hope you enjoy the show. - Bernard Zee
